I'd preferring starting with a clay than sand... sand drains very easily and has almost no nutrients, where as clay is full of nutrients. Sand requires LOTS AND LOTS of organic matter to help it retain moisture and nutrients, and clay can be easily amended with lime and compost, and then a nice layer of mulch..

very good point about soil types. Huge difference between sandy loam and clay loam.

I agree ; using wood frames for raised beds seems extravagant , and just means cutting down MORE trees . In the spirit of the Garbage Warrior i used old metal office shelves and roof tiles i got for free .junk in other words , i let them down about 6 inches into the soil . i reckon this helps keep out perrenial weeds and stops the sides collapsing . I reckon the Chinese must get less rain than we do in England
